The Construction Safety Officers will manage the Health Safety Management Plan and act as the project’s primary safety representatives. They will be qualified individuals responsible for identifying and controlling potential health and safety hazards related to the main civil works contract in accordance with applicable safety laws.
  • Being thoroughly familiar with the contents of the Health Safety Management Plan and the federal, provincial, local and contractual requirements upon which it is based
  • Working with supervision to communicate the Health Safety Management Plan to all workers
  • Maintaining open communication with the leadership to ensure ongoing compliance with the Health Safety Management Plan
  • Informing workers of potential dangers in the workplace and advising them of precautionary measures
  • Providing responses to workers regarding any concerns about occupational health and safety requirements
  • Participating in pre-job meetings
  • Facilitating appropriate planning and communication between project team members
  • Reviewing subcontractors’ safety materials and the qualifications of their personnel, as appropriate
  • Coordinating safety orientations
  • Conducting daily safety observations
  • Conducting at least one formal safety inspection per week in each safety area to ensure compliance with the Health Safety Management Plan; informing all workers regarding the outcomes of these inspections; and, forwarding the reports to the construction managers
  • Continually identifying hazards, assessing safety risks and implementing controls
  • Identifying and documenting unsafe acts or conditions that require immediate correction and communicating them to the supervisor responsible
  • Notifying the Project Director, the QHSE Director, Site Safety Manager, and applicable Managers; of all incidents and safety concerns
  • Enacting stop-work procedures as required
  • Ensuring that injured individuals receive timely and appropriate medical attention
  • Accompanying injured workers to medical facilities to ensure correct and proper information is given to the attending medical personnel
  • Ensuring that all incidents, accidents, property damage and vehicle incidents are reported promptly and investigated as required
  • Overseeing and participating in incident investigations
  • Forwarding all incident reports and associated information to the QHSE Director, Site Safety Manager, and Managers
  • Consulting with the Project Director, the QHSE Director, Site Safety Manager, and Managers on all safety and health issues
  • Conducting weekly safety meetings and providing the minutes to the Site Safety Manager, the applicable Construction Managers and Directors, Project Director and QHSE Director
  • Ensuring that all required safety documentation is reviewed and stored within the project’s document control system
  • Create Standard Operating Procedures, Safe work practices, and any other safety related reports, procedures and documents as required
  • Being a champion of the sites’ safety culture

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to sort, check, and verify information

  • Ability to work independently, as well as work effectively in a team environment and collaboratively with other departments
  • Flexibility to adapt to all situations and work varied hours

  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and collaborative skills
Experience/ Qualifications
  • CSO or NCSO designation
  • 6 years hands-on Safety experience in the construction industry
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel and Intermediate Word Processing skills
  • Experience in large scale civil, concrete and dam experience and asset
  • Proven working experience in technical writing of Health and Safety
  • At least one year of experience in a health and safety role in the province of British Columbia within the last 3 years
