Position Summary:
Reporting to the Manager of Campus Services, the incumbent will provide leadership to
custodial and grounds employees on campus. He/she will equip and empower
employees to maintain the cleanliness of assigned University building(s) and upkeep of
university grounds, as well as provide essential services during winter weather events.
He/she will train and develop employees to provide service levels and maintain safe
working practices and documentation consistent with Facilities Management
requirements and customer expectations.

Position Description
A. Position Responsibilities
1. Plan, schedule, assign, and supervise the work of custodians and grounds crew
working on campus, including housecleaning and floor care, maintaining campus
grounds, and providing essential services during winter weather events.
2. Inspect, monitor, and report on work quality, efficiency, and productivity to ensure
that deficiencies are corrected, and customer expectations and Facilities
Management and continuous improvement requirements are met.
3. Train or inform employees of new work methods or procedures, changes in safety
regulations and work policies.
4. Hold regular individual and team check in’s and meetings for alignment on
requirements and to foster employee input on improved work practices.

5. Motivate and coach employees on job related matters and prepare and conduct
counseling and performance assessments.
6. Promote safe work practices and enforce safety regulations and adherence to
proper codes and standards. Conduct inspections and accident & incident
investigations and help maintain the material safety data sheets inventory for the
Custodial and Grounds Departments. Guide employees in the preparation of WCB
7. Observe and report, through the work order system, all defects, deterioration, and
wear and tear on the facilities and grounds equipment. Provide inventory control of

B. Qualifications for Appointment
The incumbent interacts on a daily basis with his/her manager, suppliers and the
University administration, faculty, and staff regarding the provision of Custodial and
Grounds services and the coordination of work, and occasionally with students,
consultants and contractors. The incumbent participates on committees and in meetings
as required. He/she also provides guidance and advice on custodial/grounds-related
matters to his/her Manager and other tradespersons, supervisors, and managers of
Facilities Management and Administrative Services. At times, the incumbent is exposed
to sensitive information and must adhere to Facility Management policies on information
The incumbent must possess a thorough knowledge of supervisory principles, practices,
and techniques and of the standard practices and methods of the custodial trade.
He/she must have a sound knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials common to
the custodial and grounds- trades. Considerable knowledge of safety precautions,
recordkeeping, and computer operation is essential. Working knowledge of
spreadsheets (Excel), word processing (Microsoft Word) and e-mail (Outlook) software
is necessary.
The incumbent must possess the people skills and professionalism required to perform
at a high level in a very demanding workload situation. He/she must have a high degree

of tact and diplomacy dealing with employees and the University community under a
variety of difficult situations and be sensitive toward the cultural diversity of the campus
He/she must have the ability to demonstrate good judgment and skill in the planning,
organizing, controlling, and directing of all aspects of the overall custodial and grounds
related functions on campus. He/she must demonstrate a positive can-do attitude and
view challenges as opportunities to improve.
He/she must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to
assist in providing general information to the university community and visitors. He/she
must be able to follow oral and written instructions and to express ideas effectively and
concisely. He/she must be able to engage, motivate and coach employees.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid provincial driver’s license.
2. High School Diploma or equivalent GED certificate.
3. Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience, with preference given to
experience in the custodial care and maintenance of facilities, grounds maintenance
or in customer service.
