The Collection Officer, under the general direction of the Collection Manager, is responsible to collect outstanding debts due the Province and public sector which have been assigned from various Client Departments and programs. S/he is responsible for managing an assigned portfolio as a member of a collection team. The Collection Officer's responsibility is to ensure that debts are monitored and resolved promptly and cost effectively and that all debtors are treated in a responsive and professional manner.
Bachelor's Degree plus 1 year related experience, in the collection recovery field, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. The successful applicant must have excellent judgement and organizational skills in conjunction with highly developed financial and situational analytical skills to interpret and assess financial statements. S/he should have strong interview and negotiation skills, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be proficient in defusing difficult situations with distressed and sometimes hostile debtors.
Candidate should be proficient in computerized applications such as MS Office, and e-mail applications. A good working knowledge of collection practices, case load management, follow-up, bankruptcy, summary judgment, and execution procedures is necessary. Banking experience would be considered a definite asset.
Pay Grade: PR 06 - PR 10
Salary Range: $1,683.70 - $2,414.48 Bi-Weekly
This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union. Applicants applying for this opportunity must clearly indicate in their covering letter or resume that he/she is currently a Nova Scotia Government Civil Service Employee and a member of the NSGEU and include their Employee ID. Failure to do so means that your application will not be given first consideration and will only be included if external applications are pursued.
